This handbook is created for teachers who are searching for
ways to encourage parents to be more actively involved in their children’s literacy practices.
It is divided into three parts; Reading Activities To Do At Home, Family Literacy Night Ideas, and Parent Communication. The activities are divided into 3 levels, easy (1 star), medium (2 stars), and advanced (3 stars).
The “Reading Activities To Do At Home” section is a great tool to
give parents ideas of how to help their children. Oftentimes, parents want to help, but do not know how. It’s also a great tool to utilize in the classroom when you have a parent come in and help run a literacy center. All you have to do is print out the activity, gather the materials, and you’re good to go!
The “Family Literacy Night Ideas” section will give teachers various examples of ways to incorporate Family Literacy at your school. This is one of my favorite sections because it brought parents, teachers, and students together. There are wonderful ideas to create fun reading nights at school where everyone is involved! It was a huge hit at my schools with a high English Learner population. But it’s also great for all types of schools!
Finally, the “Parent Communication” section offers easy ways to communicate with parents and understand their culture, background, and educational history. It is the first step in building a successful relationship to support their child. It has wonderful newsletter ideas, parent notes, and much more!
I hope you find this handbook helpful in your classroom. Good luck
encouraging your scholars’ parents, it can be done! I can’t wait to hear how it works in your classroom!
