Reading Mini-lesson Template and other Reading forms
By Jen from Hello Literacy
This product is designed for the reading teacher that is already familiar with the reading workshop format and needs a bit of help tightening up the mini lesson.
- Mini lessons are designed to be delivered over a short 10 minute period of time, not 40 or 50 minutes. When teachers talk too much and give students multiple teaching points instead of focusing on ONE teaching point, students walk away from the rug confused about what to do or try on as a reader that day.
- The mini lesson should always only ever have one teaching point, or strategy, not five or ten. There will always be 5, 10 or 20 teaching possibilities, but the mini lesson is that micro teaching lesson where you just tell, demonstrate and practice doing one of them. As students add reading strategies to their repertoire of strategies that readers do, they will become more independent, strategic, proficient and confident readers. The teaching point of a mini lesson can be a reading skill, a reading strategy, a reading tool, or a reading procedure.
Included in this product is an overview of reading workshop, components of reading workshop, reading workshop template, a reading conference form, a strategy group assignment sheet and a strategy group sign-up sheet.
This product does not include what the teaching points or reading strategies for the mini lesson should be, but does show how to take any reading strategy from The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo and how to write a mini lesson off of strategy from her book using the template provided in this product.
