Easy valentine art

I love easy art projects for young learners because they’re fun, beautiful, and the kids really enjoy them.  You can adapt these two projects for any time of the year.  We used them this year for our valentine art.

The activity

I like to do this valentine art activity in small groups.  I pass out a piece of wax paper to each child and have them trace a heart using a sharpie.

Students will spread the glue-water mixture onto the was paper.  Make sure to spread it all the way to the edge.  Then, students will get a strip of tissue paper and lay it down.  Spread the glue mixture on top so that it’s wet, but not too wet.  You’ll need to remind the kids to make sure every piece is covered in the mixture.

I love giving my kids creative freedom so they can create any design that they’d like.

Once students write their names on the wax paper in sharpie, we lay it out to dry.  I tried using a drying rack this year and it didn’t work out very well since the wax paper isn’t sturdy.  I’d suggest finding an open spot to let them dry out.

Once they’re dry, cut them out hang them up in a window.

Love Art

You can do this project with any {short} word.  Peace, happy, spring, a name, you get the idea!  We used them this year for a valentine art project for our memory books. I am paid a small fee from Amazon for sharing some of my favorite ELA resources with you!

Materials

  • construction paper or card stock
  • permanent marker
  • letter templates for the word you want to spell
  • bleeding tissue paper (it’s different than the regular kind and they don’t have it at Hobby Lobby)
  • water
  • paint brush
  • bowl

Activity

I was lucky enough to have a parent draw the lines on the paper for us.  I had her draw 4 rectangles. I had the letters in ziplock bags and passed them out to the class.  Each pair had their own bag to trace. Once everyone traced their letters, I modeled how to add lines with different curves, edges, thickness, etc.  Have students draw their design but DO NOT go inside the letter.

Now here’s the fun part!  I had my kids get into groups and I passed out bowls of water and paint brushes.  I showed students how to dab water onto the paper before adding the bleeding tissue paper. It’s important to put the tissue on straight, rather than diagonal.

Students were required to use like colors in each box so that each box really stands out.  It was a great time to review warm and cool colors.

Students loved peeling off the dry tissue paper and throwing it away.  They were so impressed with each other!

We added them to our memory book for a nice valentine art display.  I’m hoping to do this again for an Open House project.

Christmas gift ideas for parents and volunteers

I’ve got a few last minute Christmas gift ideas for my students.   This time of the year is super busy, so I’m all about low-to-no-prep.  I’ve got a cute art project and gift tag for you.

Christmas gift for parents

This tree is adorable.  Last year, we put these in frames and sent them home as family gifts.  All you have to do is print out the free template.  Then, cut out strips of paper.  I like bright, Astrobrite paper.  Students glue the strips of paper onto the tree.  Once all the paper has been glued on, flip the tree over and trim the excess paper.  Students tore tiny pieces of yellow paper for the star.

Christmas Gift for volunteers

In the past, I’ve always done these yummy mason jar snacks for parents.  But this year, I have too much going on to run to the store and get the ingredients to throw together.  I’m trying to do things this month that make my life easier.  So, this is when my awesome coworker comes in.  He has an awesome neighbor who makes these succulents.  He even throws in a cute Christmas decoration (not pictured).  The best part, it only cost 2.50 per plant, which really helps out when you have ten parent volunteers.  I made this cute tag to attach (free). How easy is that?!?!

Books Teachers Love for February: Looking at Lincoln and some ART

I love that every month on the 10th, a few of us teachers bring you some of our favorite read alouds each month with some great activities that you can use right away.  I’m all for easy, engaging, and fun!

What made me buy Looking at Lincoln, by Maira Kalman a few years ago with my Scholastic points was the gorgeous, bright colors.  I know you’re not suppose to judge books by their cover, but I couldn’t resist and judged away.

This book is about a little girl who is walking down the street and sees someone she thinks looks just like Abraham Lincoln.  She wants to learn more about him and discovers many fascinating details.  What I love about this story is that the little girl makes connections to her life and has a few silly questions for him.  The book is written from her perspective while giving the reader many great facts.  This book is perfect to accompany your President’s unit.

How pretty are these watercolors?!?!

I use this book to supplement our curriculum.  I love to tie in our social studies with our reading and writing to I love using Teacher to the Core’s activities from her American Heroes pack.  It includes wonderful reading passages that my students work on as part of our Close Reading for the week, grammar activities, an assessment, and adorable smart art!
