Do you ever wish parents really knew what teaching was like? Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers, but it’s also one of the hardest. I wish that parents knew how much I truly loved their child. Spending my paycheck on STEM supplies to help your child become a critical thinker or bright-colored paint because our school only supplies a few colors is something I do because I want to create the best learning environment for their child. I give all of my time, energy, and love to their kids. It’s hard to come home at night after a long day to a harsh e mail from a parent. Please remember that we are human and show us grace and kindness.
I asked this question to my teacher friends in my Facebook group and over on Instagram.
Teachers wish parents knew that we love your child
When I send my pupils home I worry if they’ll be ok when they leave my care. I feel proud of their independence, their good manners and their emerging sense of humour. As they zip up their coats independently, unpack their lunches or play with their friends; I’m always watching on in case they need me. I wipe their tears, make them feel valued and enable them to have confidence in themselves. My pupils give me their trust, their time and respect. I’m not just a teacher. I’m a mum, a social worker, a nurse, a therapist, a friend and an entertainer. It’s kinda cool! -Julie
I lose sleep at night worrying about each and every child in my class. I am constantly thinking of ways to help them learn and to make their year in kindergarten a positive, fun experience they will hopefully remember forever. -Stephanie
Teachers wish parents knew that we don’t have a day off
Teaching is a 24 hour job. It’s not easy to turn your brain off once you leave school. You are constantly thinking about your students, what more you can do and doing a lot of planning at home. I also spend a good portion of my income purchasing things for my students and classroom, which is tough as a single person trying to support yourself but it is all because we love what we do. -Kristen
I wish parents knew I never stop thinking about how I can help their child, even nights and weekends. I’ll do whatever I can to help their child be successful but I do sometimes have to take time for myself and my family. -Chantel 2nd grade
Teachers wish parents knew that we’re doing our best
Sometimes our hands are tied when it comes to getting kids into special programs or getting them extra help. No matter how much we want to, sadly we control so little outside our four walls. -Victoria
I want my parents to know that I care more about bettering their child as a good citizen for society than I do about them getting a 4 on their report card! -Shelby 2nd grade
I wish parents knew that I’m doing the best that I can, pulling out all of the stops, and trying everything I can to help their child learn and succeed. If I could save the world, I would, but it truly takes a village to raise a child. -Andrea 2nd grade
Teachers wish parents knew that we’re human
I’m a human with feelings, wife, and mom myself. I’m doing the best I can. I think about all my students 24/7 and how I can best serve them. Please be patient with me as I am learning too. -Tammy
For privacy issues, I CAN NOT discuss other children with you. I will listen, answer and give information only about YOUR child. -Leah
Teachers are not automatically experts on parenting and asking us parenting advice puts us in an awkward position at times. –First Grade Fun Times
