Martin Luther King Jr. Activities

We're a third of the way through December and I don't know about you but my mind is already thinking about January so I can be prepped and ready when we return from winter break.  Every month, a few of us teachers get together and share our favorite read alouds.  I've got several Martin Luther King Jr. Activities that you can use in your classroom this month.

The Book

Every January, we spend a few weeks studying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  One of my favorite books  is Martin's Big Words.  It's beautifully written and is a wonderful narrative of his life.

How I Use It

I introduce our Martin Luther King Jr. unit by reading the book.  We brainstorm facts about his life with a thinking map.  Each week, we do one written process piece so students will write a non-fiction piece on his life.  During the drafting phase, students will type up their story using Google Docs and send it to me.  We'll revise and edit it together using the “comments” feature.  The final, published pieces are hung up on our writing wall.

Art

I love to tie in art any way I can so I swoon over this free directed drawing by Kindergarten Monkey Business.  Over the years, we've used oil pastels, colored paper and crayons, and oil pastels.  I kinda heart them all.

My name is Kristen and I’ve enjoyed teaching kindergarten, first grade, a 1/2 combo, and second grade.  I’ve taught at both a low and high-performing Title I schools as well as a few fancy schools in California and O’ahu, Hawaii. I’ve earned my Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in reading in addition to my Reading Specialist Certificate.  When I am not teaching my scholars or other educators at Professional Development classes, I  enjoy creating materials to share with my colleagues, organizing family literacy events, and giving workshops on ways to make Literacy Workshop effective and engaging.
