This activity was created by Marcia Brechtel, the creator of Project GLAD. Project GLAD is a program that has amazing strategies for English Language Learners, but it works well with all learners. This is one of my favorite activities because it takes zero prep! We have to supply our own paper in my district so I use this activity with whiteboards (you’re welcome, trees)! My students love it because they love using whiteboards. {For a cheap way to create whiteboards, check out this earlier post}
The purpose of this strategy is to encourage students to visualize content as it’s being presented.
Procedure:
- Students are given a plain piece of white paper. In our class, we use whiteboards. Students keep a whiteboard, dry erase marker, and eraser at their desk. Since we use them so much, it’s easier they have all their materials with them. It saves so much time rather than passing out materials.
- If reading from a book, make sure to hide the cover of the book so students do not receive any visual input. Our reading series has a weekly read aloud in the TE that has no pictures. Therefore, we typically do the Listen and Sketch from there. It’s also great to do the L&S with a read aloud that has pictures. At the end of the activity, you can read the story again, and show the illustrations. Students love comparing theirs.
- The teacher reads a short story in small chunks. Selected text can be fiction or expository.
- Students are instructed to keep pencils/markers down and listen as the teacher reads. You really need to model this so students know the routine.
- After each chunk, the teacher instructs the students to quickly sketch what they visualized from the chunk of text that was just read. I normally set the timer for 30 seconds. When the timer goes off, they must put writing instrument down. You’ll always have the kiddos who want to keep drawing so spend a lot of time modeling the correct behavior. The first few times, students earn lots of marble for our marble jar, when everyone puts their markers down as soon as the timer goes off.
- As English Only students begin to sketch, circulate around the class to provide support to EL students by showing them any visuals from the text.
- At the end of the story, I have students partner-share their sketch. They talk about what is the same and what is different. Then, they hold them in front of their chests so I can see. It’s so neat to see how different everyone’s sketches are.
Note:
There are no restrictions to how students develop and organize their sketches. Students can also add text to their sketches.
Organization Tips
Have students have materials at their desk, for easy retrieval
Students can sit at the carpet while you read, so everyone is close. Or, students can sit at their desk. It’s totally your preference. I like having my kiddos close, so I can check their comprehension.
We know students tune us out after awhile, so using a book on tape/CD is a great way to change it up. I use our weekly Shared Reading story for this activity as well, since I have it on CD.
This is the story we read yesterday from our Reading Street TE |
