I don’t know about you, but I love Valentine’s Day {Hallmark holiday and all} because I love people spreading love. I especially love the idea of Valentine’s Day because I think it’s important for kiddos to show their love and be kind to one another. Granted they should do it all the time, but it’s especially sweet to see them try so hard.
If you follow my store, you know I’m a huge fan of monthly family art projects. It’s a great time for families to spend time together and create something fun and creative! This month, students made the most adorable boxes for their valentines.

3-D valentine card
I found this cute valentine card from one of my friends who taught 5th grade in Hawaii. I always do the same boring card, so I thought this would be fun and easy for me. I’m a huge fan of as little prep. as possible. Who’s got time for all that? All you need is a piece of construction paper and a black sharpie.
Students traced their hand with a sharpie first. Then they drew a heart in the corner. I teach first and second graders and thought they may need a template for their heart, but they did great free-handing it!
Next, they used a sheet of paper {we had our Rocket Math out} so they used the paper to make straight lines. Remind your students that they CAN NOT draw lines through the hand. I told them it was hot lava and they cracked up!
I just kinda made up the rest. We drew a diagonal line from the pinky to the bottom of the thumb. Then we made horizontal lines. Next up, a line on the bottom of the thumb and drew more lines. We just kept going this way and drawing the lines in different directions to make the hand “pop”out. I’m telling you, my little ones were concentrating so hard that my class was silent. Music to my ears!!! Who’s with me?
Stain glass hearts
Finally, I found this cute project from Christy over at Crayons and Whimsy. I was in dire need to come up with a new gift for my students create and this was perfect, but took some patience and a little prep. You can find the full directions here.
Some tips:
Items you’ll need {wax paper, fun-colored tissue paper, liquid starch, plastic containers for starch, paint brushes, medium-large heart dye cutes (6)}
This worked best in small groups. I skipped Guided Reading and called about 6 kiddos back to the kidney table. I covered it with butcher paper and had the wax paper laid our for each little love bug.
I had cut the tissue paper in strips. I showed my group how to lay down a strip on the wax paper and “paint it” with the starch. Make sure the entire strip is wet. You can try and have them make patterns, but the tissue paper can be wiggly so I just let it be a free-for-all. They laid the tissue paper every which way and went for it.
I wrote their name or number on the wax paper and hung them on a clothespin to dry. What…clothes pins hang things up to dry? I’m so use to using them to clip papers together, write student numbers for the clip-up chart, and everything else they weren’t meant to be used for! Ok, back on track!
While some students were finishing up part 1, I called up the students whose art was dry to have them work on the next step. They put their art on a clipboard {since we were working on the carpet} and placed the art dye-cute on top.
They used a sharpie to trace the heart. Make sure they hold the heart with their free hand!
So proud of my littles!
They cut out the hears on their own and left them on their desk until we glue our photos on {which I’m printing now}. I bought cute little photo props from all your favorite stores {Target, Dollar Tree, and the 99cent store}, threw them on the kids, and took cute photos. I hope their parents love these as much as I do.
Genius if I must say so myself. We used the left over “frame” from their hearts and hung them up as stain glass windows. I love looking out our windows even more!
I swear we do more than just fun art projects, but I got such great feedback from my Instagram account that I thought I’d share!

Love all the art projects- they're so important for the little guys. It's so easy to forget they're just kids and to try to focus on learning all day! Thanks for the reminder 🙂 Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!! I love the holiday toooo 🙂
