I've been back at school for over a week…sneak peek!

I'm teaching a 1/2 combo this year so these were our first day photo props…glasses and all! I'm color-coding everything, first graders are green and second are blue.

Watching little ones do jumping jacks is quite a sight to see, cracks me up year after year!

Yikes…a before photo of my room!

New book bins for our library. Such a bargain from Big Lots!

Baking clothespins after

dyeing them with RIT dye.

Our table caddies are ready to be used!

First day gifts for my new friends. They were so excited to wear them home on the first day!

A sweet gift from a student, adorable!!!

Love tear art, almost zero prep.!!!

We love sharing our schema with G.L.A.D. observation charts. Kiddos share their knowledge with a partner and write it down using my smelly markers.

Introduced Literacy Workshop/Centers. The magnets were a huge hit!

This poor guy has been neglected after 13+ hour days. I brought him in Sunday to “help.”

My firsties are using the Target Dollar Spot plastic sleeves to practice their printing using the Handwriting Without Tears program.

The end of a crazy, hectic, exciting first week. We just started our reading program, math series, Word Study, and Literacy Workshop today. Needless to say, I'm wiped out.

If you have any management or organizational ideas for a combo class, I'd love to hear them! How's your week been?
My name is Kristen and I’ve enjoyed teaching kindergarten, first grade, a 1/2 combo, and second grade.  I’ve taught at both a low and high-performing Title I schools as well as a few fancy schools in California and O’ahu, Hawaii. I’ve earned my Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in reading in addition to my Reading Specialist Certificate.  When I am not teaching my scholars or other educators at Professional Development classes, I  enjoy creating materials to share with my colleagues, organizing family literacy events, and giving workshops on ways to make Literacy Workshop effective and engaging.
